Gold card is a loyalty program by Starbucks, which helps you to

So when you register your gift card it starts giving you stars
for every transaction you do at any store.
After 5 transactions you become green card holder. That means
you can get refill on coffee and tea and coupons
After next 30 transactions you become gold card member where you
get free stuff after every 12th transaction.
